From an early age, she was interested in nature conservation and renewable energy. On the Board of Directors of the nature conservation association NABU, she worked to bridge the gap between nature conservation and technology. And as a committee chair at VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies), she focused on the topics of \u201cwomen and technology\u201d and climate action. Martina Hofmann is a bundle of energy \u2013 and renewable in the truest sense of the word. I\u2019ve wanted to save and protect things ever since I was small \u2013 back then, it was nature. I asked myself: How can I accomplish the most? What must I do to ensure that I can contribute as much as possible?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-3tyi0xi-1dfbb4f65c0aac397cfc5248d89af173\">\n#top .hr.hr-invisible.av-3tyi0xi-1dfbb4f65c0aac397cfc5248d89af173{\nheight:30px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='hr av-3tyi0xi-1dfbb4f65c0aac397cfc5248d89af173 hr-invisible  avia-builder-el-13  el_after_swe_special_images  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-lnbtvhyg-a69b075fccd26d4463dc8971f539b771'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>This is how Martina Hofmann came to study electrical engineering. \u201cAt the time, I was a huge fan of electric cars. Cars with combustion engines still stank awfully and spat out black exhaust fumes. This did terrible damage to the environment. But it motivated me. As an electrical engineer, I thought, I can help to improve electric cars and ensure that they can be run on renewable energy. Back then, I still believed that photovoltaics could be used for this directly. I had no idea about the constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The specialization \u201cElectrical Energy Technology \u2013 Renewable Energy\u201d at TU Darmstadt was one of the first study programs on the topic of renewable energy in Germany. \u201cI wrote my student research paper on wind power, my thesis on photovoltaics. But the circumstances were different then. At the end of my studies, wind turbines were few and far between, and no more than 30 meters tall. Photovoltaics was so expensive that it was not economically viable.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-lnbukslx-34cec72a223b6d9ca6888a3bd45d4b9b\">\n#top .hr.hr-invisible.av-lnbukslx-34cec72a223b6d9ca6888a3bd45d4b9b{\nheight:50px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='hr av-lnbukslx-34cec72a223b6d9ca6888a3bd45d4b9b hr-invisible  avia-builder-el-15  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ln3bhqqb-8e6f452a12a424592a1e2dd7525c1e1b'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>\u201cFirst understand how the world works\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>For Martina Hofmann, it was too early to join the renewable energy sector: \u201cVery few people did; it always made you a bit of an outsider.\u201d So she decided to become acquainted with industry: \u201cI thought it was important to have an overview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the daughter of a railway family, traffic technology seemed the obvious way to go. \u201cIt\u2019s virtually electromobility, after all. But then I really got into oil and gas, designed drive systems for compressor stations on gas pipelines, and was in the mining business, specifically ore mining. I traveled a lot, took everything in and tried to understand how the world works.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ln3aez1g-c97e20c589135eea03ee64152c36b72e'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Later, at Siemens\u2019 Stuttgart branch, Martina Hofmann discovered the field of energy efficiency. When her proposal to establish a separate department for this mission fell on deaf ears, she left the company and took up the endowed chair for \u201cRenewable Energy\u201d in the electrical engineering program at Aalen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thus returned to my life\u2019s true purpose. And all my experiences in industry help me here. I know my stuff, because I lived and breathed this traditional industry for ten years. That\u2019s very valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-2ggnxo6-760bdc2a7d01d0b0979e75e4bb21fbff\">\n#top .hr.hr-invisible.av-2ggnxo6-760bdc2a7d01d0b0979e75e4bb21fbff{\nheight:50px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='hr av-2ggnxo6-760bdc2a7d01d0b0979e75e4bb21fbff hr-invisible  avia-builder-el-18  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ln3ah2rt-a8d1ec40c34bf9f4a7d605bd0d32239c'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>\u201cLocal authorities have the greatest leverage in the climate transformation\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Martina Hofmann explains: \u201cA few years ago, it became clear to me that local authorities have the greatest leverage in the climate transformation. If you have land, you can generate energy. By law, local authorities are the lords of the land. Whoever decides what happens on the land has control over how quickly or how slowly the energy transition is realized \u2013 in addition to a few other factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo land is the basis for the energy transition \u2013 but local authorities have lost sight of the issue a little, because it\u2019s being drowned out by lots of other issues. They already have their hands full with providing public services, such as refugee accommodation, childcare, and the COVID-19 pandemic. And now there\u2019s climate change as well \u2013 with brand new issues they have to deal with. Most full-timers in local authorities have studied government at some point, but the transformation of the energy system is not on the syllabus,\u201d says Martina Hofmann.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ln3ahdlm-a3bf6573c2d8fa1f66d602aa8b8a25df'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>On one side are overstretched local authorities with potential for change, on the other a highly motivated expert, networker and climate protection campaigner, who has spent the last ten years broadening her focus: \u201cI am well versed on all types of renewable energy and climate change adaptation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martina Hofmann concludes: \u201cScholarship and research are great. But now other things are important. In academia, I could not make the impact I hoped for, and in research even less. It has to come from two sides: Everyone in the global community has to agree to put up money and pass laws. This is already happening on a large scale at EU level and is heading in a good direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this brings us to my new position at Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg\u2019s Climate Action and Energy Agency. In Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, I am now responsible for turbocharging the energy transition,\u201d says Martina Hofmann on her new role. It probably won\u2019t be the last transition in her life.
